Geothermal Heat Pumps Questions

Every question we get asked about geothermal heat pumps, answered straight.

Questions

How It Works

How long does a geothermal system actually last?

The buried loop field carries a 50-plus year service life. The indoor unit, compressor, heat exchanger, and circulating pump, typically lasts 20 to 25 years because it runs in a conditioned space rather than exposed to outdoor weather.

Will my Lakewood lot work for a ground loop?

Most single-family lots in the area work with one configuration or the other. Larger lots suit horizontal trenching; smaller ones use vertical drilling. A site evaluation determines which approach fits your soil conditions and available space before any work is planned.

What happens if I delay replacing an aging system?

An undersized or failing indoor unit loses efficiency each season, raising operating costs while comfort drops. Waiting also means missing years of the 30% federal tax credit, which runs through 2032 but cannot be applied retroactively to work done before the credit period ends.

Is the 30% federal tax credit still available in 2026?

Yes. The Inflation Reduction Act geothermal tax credit covers 30% of installed costs and runs through 2032. It applies to Colorado homeowners on qualifying residential installations and is claimed on your federal tax return for the year the system is placed in service.

What is the difference between geothermal and a regular heat pump?

A standard heat pump exchanges heat with outdoor air, so efficiency drops when temperatures are extreme. A geothermal system exchanges heat with the ground, where temperatures stay stable year-round. That stability is why geothermal systems maintain consistent output through Colorado’s coldest and hottest months.

What does the upfront process look like before any digging starts?

A load calculation and site review come first. Those results determine loop type, loop length, and indoor unit capacity. You then receive a written estimate covering all of that before any trenching, drilling, or equipment is ordered.
